a The Buffalo News rt SUNDAY JUNE 25 1995 SECTION Inside Entertainment Guide I G2 Summer Reading G7 Soaking up the music on KJi VULQO the steps oiihe Albright Knox JAZZ By MARY KUNZ News Staff Jazz blooms in strange and wonderful places It rose from the steamy sidewalks of Harlem It bubbled from the hot shores of the Mississippi River In Buffalo it flourishes every summer on the steps of the Albright Knox Art Gallery or many Western New York music lovers summer go into high gear until crowds gather on the gallery steps to bake in the sun eat hot dogs and soak up the sounds of Jazz at the Albright Knox The free Sunday concert series sponsored by The Buffalo News will begin July 9 think just one of so many things that makes Buffalo a great place to be in the says Stanford Lipsey publisher of The News particularly has a rich history of jazz so more appropriate than being outside oh a Sunday with the cool breeze hearing great An ardent jazz fan Lipsey is a regular at the gallery concerts So is Don Metz the local jazz programmer who helped plan this lineup one of the best things free music the Metz says he points out can go right from here to Shakespeare in the Jazz at the Albright Knox is now in its 13th year It has become a Buffalo institution not only because of its longevity but because it fills a unique niche As Metz explains the one program that has consistently supported local This concert schedule: July 16: The Bobby Militello Quartet July 23: The Buffalo Jazz Workshop featuring visiting vibrophonist Joe Locke July 30: Los Caribes a colorful Latin jazz band Aug 6: The Buffalo Jazz Workshop with guest guitarist Dave Stryker Aug 13: The Bobby Militello Quartet with vocalist Nancy Kelly Aug 20: The Buffalo Jazz Workshop featuring saxophonist Don Rice All concerts begin at 2 pm True to tradition the jazz series is anchored by the Buffalo Jazz Workshop under the direction of saxophonist Sam alzone has changed his band through the years This is the best band Metz says See hai Page G6 How creators drew on life and legend rr li A VS Irene Bedard the voice of Pocahontas World but is heard i By NICOLE PERADOTTONews Staff Reporter newest heroine combines the charm to woo the most die hard mercenary with the savvy to save him from the chopping block So who better to create her than one of the most beautiful people and one of most powerful?
